Community Outpouring for the Herzfeld Family
When the Herzfeld family entered the National Mobility Awareness Contest to win a handicap-accessible van, they never imagined their cause would go viral (to read about their cause and vote in the contest, click here: http://www.mobilityawarenessmonth.com/entrant/esther-herzfeld-teaneck-nj/), but it has, both within and beyond the local Jewish community. In response to this tremendous outpouring of concern, the Herzfeld Family Fund (managed by the Bergen County Chapter of United Way) has been established to assist the family in achieving greater success in managing its ever-growing physical and medical needs, including construction upgrades to their home configuration needed to accommodate their extraordinary physical challenges and to allow for a safe and comfortable living environment.

Scholar-in-Residence at Shomrei Torah
Rabbi Shmuel Silber will be the scholar-in-residence on the Shabbat of May 29-30 at Congregation Shomrei Torah in Fair Lawn, NJ.
Rabbi Silber is the rav of a Baltimore shul, Suburban Orthodox Toras Chaim. In addition, he is the dean and founder of the Institute for Jewish Continuity in Baltimore. The institute’s mission is to provide inspiring and intellectually invigorating Torah learning to all levels of learners. They fulfill that mission through offering a variety of classes, as well as a diverse mix of lecturers. The institute features a virtual classroom and easy-to-navigate website. It has become a learning portal for individuals across the globe.
Rabbi Silber previously served as Assistant Rabbi at Congregation Shomrei Torah. He was also Director of Education for KOF-K Kosher Supervision.
Rabbi Silber received semicha from Yeshiva University. In addition, he received a master’s degree in Secondary Jewish Education from Azrieli Graduate School at Yeshiva University. He is the author of a book entitled The Melting Pot, which was published in honor of Israel’s 60th birthday.
American Pharoah Wins the Second Leg of the Triple Crown
Teaneck resident Ahmed Zayat enjoyed a thrilling sports weekend as his horse, American Pharoah, won the second leg of the Triple Crown, the Preakness Stakes. The horse, which was the overwhelming favorite, edged out an eight-horse field in the middle of a pouring rain.
The Preakness is run at Pimlico racetrack which is located in Baltimore, Maryland. Just two weeks earlier, American Pharoah won the first leg of the Triple Crown, the Kentucky Derby. The third leg of the Triple Crown, the Belmont Stakes, will take place on June 6 in Elmont, New York. If American Pharoah wins the Belmont Stakes, it will become the first Triple Crown winner since 1978 when Affirmed won.
Congregation Rinat Yisrael to Host Ma’ayanot for Women’s Tikkun Leil Shavuot
Ma’ayanot Yeshiva High School for Girls has invited community women to a Tikkun Leil Shavout at Congregation Rinat Yisrael.
The program begins at 11:45 PM and the first speaker will be Mrs. Rivka Kahan, the school’s principal. Other speakers are Mrs. Yael Weil and Ms. Ora Laufer. A learning program led by Ma’ayanot alumnae will run from 2:20-3:00 AM, and will be followed by senior and alumnae chaburot from 3:10-4:00 AM. Rabbi Menachem Leibtag to Speak at Congregation Beth Aaron
On Shabbat, May 23, Rabbi Menachem Leibtag will speak twice at Congregation Beth Aaron. He will speak at approximately 9:30 a.m. on “The Meaning of the Word ‘Torah’ in the Torah” and at 6:50 p.m., on “Omer: Something to Count or Something to Eat? The Biblical Connection between Shemitta and Har Sinai.”
Rabbi Menachem Leibtag is an internationally acclaimed Bible scholar and lecturer. He has taught at Yeshivat Har Etzion for over twenty years and also teaches at Yeshivat Shalavim, Midreshet Lindenbaum, MMY, Orot and at YU. His is the founder of Tanach.org, and his weekly essays on Parshat Ha’shavua are read by thousands worldwide.
Team Zeidel
to Participate in ALS Walk
On Sunday, May 31, a Walk to Defeat ALS is taking place in Saddle River County Park located in Saddle Brook, NJ. The three-mile walk begins at 10:30 AM with check-in beginning at 9:00.
Team Zeidel is captained by Dassi Zeidel who walks in honor of her father, Irving “Itch” Zeidel. He was diagnosed with ALS in 2012. The Zeidels are members of the Beth Aaron community
In years past, Team Zeidel has raised more than $20,000 and had more than 100 people show up to support the team on the day of the walk. This year, the goal is to raise $25,000.
