Daughters of Miriam Receives Accreditation From JCAHO

Clifton—Since its founding in 1921, Daughters of Miriam Center/The Gallen Institute, a long-term care and rehabilitation facility located in Clifton, has worked to provide quality care to the seniors of northern New Jersey. To demonstrate its commitment to excellence, for the past 40 years the Center has sought accreditation with the Joint Commission on the Accreditation of Healthcare Organizations (JCAHO). Once again, the Center has proven that commitment, meeting JCAHO’s exacting standards and earning a three-year accreditation. In addition, the Center is the only Jewish long-term-care facility in northern New Jersey to seek Joint Commission accreditation.

The Joint Commission evaluates and accredits more than 20,000 health-care organizations and programs in the United States. An independent, not-for-profit organization, the Joint Commission is the nation’s predominant standards-setting and accrediting body in health care. Since 1951, the Joint Commission has maintained standards that focus on improving the quality and safety of care provided by health-care organizations. The Joint Commission’s comprehensive accreditation process evaluates an organization’s compliance with these standards and other accreditation requirements. Daughters of Miriam Center received the JCAHO accreditation after an on-site survey showed it is in compliance with the Joint Commission’s national standards for nursing care, which far exceed State and Federal guidelines. Joint Commission accreditation is recognized nationwide as a symbol of quality that reflects an organization’s commitment to meeting high performance standards.

Established in 1966, The Joint Commission’s Nursing Care Center Accreditation Program, formerly the Long Term Care Accreditation Program, accredits approximately 1,000 organizations nationwide that offer nursing and rehabilitation services.

“Joint Commission accreditation provides nursing homes with the processes needed to improve the care patients and residents receive,” said Gina Zimmermann, MS, executive director, Nursing Care Center Accreditation Program, The Joint Commission. “We commend Daughters of Miriam Center/The Gallen Institute for its efforts to become a quality improvement organization.”

Frank DaSilva, the Center’s Chief Operating Officer, was understandably pleased with the results of the survey and commented, “This accreditation is a reflection of a facility-wide commitment to providing our seniors with the highest quality care.” In praising employees, DaSilva remarked, “I am always proud of the staff of Daughters of Miriam Center/The Gallen Institute and the exemplary care they administer to our residents. It is gratifying to see their hard work recognized through the Joint Commission’s accreditation.”

Daughters of Miriam Center/The Gallen Institute is a state-of-the-art long-term care and subacute facility providing broad-based services to seniors. Emphasizing a continuum-of-care focus, Center divisions include a skilled nursing facility, a subacute care wing, a dementia care pavilion, a rehabilitation program, a sheltered workshop, hospice care, a respite program and senior housing with supportive services.
