This past Friday morning, over 100 Westchester Day School students, parents, alumni and grandparents gathered together to daven at Neitz Hachama (commonly referred to as Neitz), when the sun becomes visible over the horizon. While the Long Island Sound is an exquisite backdrop for experiential learning daily at WDS, the chance to gather for this particular moment of prayer and reflection—arriving at Shemoneh Esrei at that exact moment of sunrise—is a unique opportunity that presents for students around the time we change the clocks. Despite the thick fog that rolled in, blocking the ability to notice the moment the sun appeared over the horizon, Rabbi in Residence Rabbi Nuriel Klinger, helped WDS explore the positive of the moment: noticing the beauty of God’s world in ways that we may have missed had the fog not been there. During the tefillah everyone appreciated the silence of the morning only interrupted by the occasional chirping of the which looked like a beautiful painting. Life is often not the way we plan or envision it, but in those moments we must seek ways to notice the unique beauty in Hashem’s world—and what a beautiful davening He provided for us.
