In the Westchester Torah Academy science lab, middle school students are studying the most precious resource that humanity has: water. Making up 60% of the human body and more than 70% of the Earth’s surface, water is abundant in the environment, and yet so much of it is not useful to us for drinking and raising food. Sixth and seventh grade students conducted a series of experiments to learn all about the different properties of water, including modeling the water molecule, comparing and contrasting how hot and cold water interact with the environment around them, and why water, unlike most other substances, expands when frozen. To culminate the unit, lab partners worked together to design water filtration systems.
