The SAR Academy third grade visited Jungle World and Madagascar at the Bronx Zoo to enhance their study of rainforests. From the minute students entered the warm, misty exhibits, they were mesmerized by the wide variety of fascinating animals and plants. For example, they were treated to close-up looks of red ruffed lemurs, ring-tailed lemurs, bats, Malaysian tapirs, a baby tree kangaroo, a leopard, ebony langurs, gibbons, hornbills, walking stick insects and gharials. Luckily, the animals were delighted to welcome winter visitors and many put on quite a show, jumping along the branches and vines of the rainforest trees. The third graders were also impressed to see the huge buttress roots they had learned about in class, as well as the largest flower in the world, the rafflesia. What an amazing trip to inspire the third graders as they research different aspects of the rainforest!
