Several weeks ago, the Moriah sixth grade began their Advisory unit on Understanding Difference by reading the children’s book version of R.J. Palacio’s book, “Wonder.” This jump started an intense conversation about people with disabilities and how we interact with them. The classes learned that “there is no dishonor in having a disability,” and that we all have strengths and weaknesses. Each one of us is a person and deserves to be included with love and respect.
After spending several weeks on this topic, the students feel so fortunate to have been able to visit the New Jersey Yachad Center this week. They were introduced to several of the Yachad members who told the Moriah students about their daily routines, as well as the life skills that they learn from the Yachad day program. The sixth graders listened respectfully while the presenters spoke and asked questions that demonstrated their interest and sensitivity.
