As an introduction to their next unit in public speaking entitled, “The Public Speaking Professionals’ Project,” Rebecca Lopkin took her class outside to allow them to experience one profession where public speaking is key: sports. She took the students to the basketball court and paired them into teams with one member of the team playing the athlete and the other the sports broadcaster. Teams played one-on-one games with each team’s sports broadcaster calling the game, covering the play-by-play, inventing “stats” for their player and filling the gaps in with constant banter. The students had a memorable experience trying out a profession in which their public speaking skills were put to the test.
