A Highland Park Family’s Journey to Harish

The Sheldon family.

(Courtesy of NBN) Brett (Moshe) and Shira Sheldon recently moved from Highland Park to Harish, Israel. Despite their initial challenge with not speaking Hebrew, they are ready for the change. Shira, a nurse practitioner, will work remotely before transitioning into playing a pivotal role in Israel’s healthcare system amidst the ongoing war. Moshe, a social worker who runs a group therapy practice, plans to continue his business remotely.

Moshe’s religious journey began in a Reform/Conservative background, which deepened during his time at Rutgers University, and further developed during his studies at a yeshiva in Israel. Shira, who comes from a Conservative/Orthodox background, attended a Jewish high school in Philadelphia and became more observant in college.

The Sheldons chose Harish for its growing Anglo community, walkable environment and diverse population. They are making aliyah with Nefesh B’Nefesh, in cooperation with Israel’s Ministry of Aliyah and Integration, the Jewish Agency for Israel, Keren Kayemeth LeIsrael and JNF-USA.

“Harish reminds us of Highland Park—it’s walkable, small, and has a diverse community,” Shira said.

They are moving with their four children: Avigail, 9; Miriam, 5; Tehila, 3; and Noam, 4 months. Shira acknowledges the challenges of moving during wartime but remains optimistic.

Driven by faith, Shira said, “It’s a question of emunah. It comes down to a choice—do I stay in America, or do I go to a place where Hashem will take care of me? The answer is simple.”

The Sheldons have always planned to move to Israel, and with Moshe’s ability to work remotely, they seized the opportunity. Shira advises other young mothers considering such a move to establish a support network and take it step by step, believing the investment in their future will be worthwhile.
