ASHAR seventh graders visited the Regeneron DNA Learning Center in Sleepy Hollow, New York, and conducted an experiment in genetic engineering. After learning about DNA and genetics in biology class, the students applied their knowledge in a real-life experiment. Using sophisticated laboratory equipment, the students modified bacteria to reproduce with green fluorescent protein, a gene that is naturally found in glowing sea creatures but not in bacteria. After allowing the bacteria to reproduce for several days, the students examined the genetically modified bacteria under UV light to detect the new glowing genes.
