County officials, community leaders and residents gathered outside One Bergen County Plaza to raise the Israeli flag and honor the lives lost in defense of freedom.
“We gathered to raise the Israeli flag at One Bergen County Plaza on Yom HaZikaron to reflect and honor all those who sacrificed their lives to defend Israel,” said Commissioner Tracy Zur. “During these last 570 days, we often felt isolated and alone. It was so important to see and feel the support of our county government.”

“As we raise the flag of Israel at One Bergen County Plaza, we do so to honor the lives lost defending the State of Israel and the innocent victims of terror—including Tenafly’s own Edan Alexander, who remains unaccounted for. But we also raise it as a symbol of resilience and unity,” said Bergen County Executive Jim Tedesco. “From the horrors of the Holocaust to the heartbreak of October 7th, history teaches us what happens when hate goes unchecked. Bergen County stands with our Jewish community—today and every day—and we remain committed to confronting antisemitism, defending democracy, and bringing every hostage home.”

The ceremony served as a moment of reflection and solidarity, standing with those in Israel and across the Jewish community who mourn and remember. The County of Bergen remains committed to promoting peace, security, and respect for all people.

Yom HaZikaron, observed annually in Israel, honors the men and women who gave their lives serving in the Israel Defense Forces as well as the victims of terrorism. It precedes Israel’s Independence Day and is marked with national observances of silence, mourning and tribute.
