Linking Northern and Central NJ, Bronx, Manhattan, Westchester and CT

Special activities took place across BPY for Pi Day. The third grade mathletes participated in a Multiplication Marathon. They had been training by practicing all of the basic multiplication facts. Students ran multiplication fact relays. The fifth graders created a Pi chain where each loop of the chain represented a digit of Pi. Students decided which color represented each digit of Pi and then cut and glued their chain links together. Sixth graders did various activities to get a “taste” of Pi Day! They sorted Pi and pie words and then found them in a hidden word search. The students were given the first 1000 digits of Pi. Then students had two minutes (only) to memorize as many digits of Pi as possible. The winning student memorized 14 digits! Other math classes created a pi day scavenger hunt. Seventh graders found the volume of the space filled with air in a canister of tennis balls by calculating the volume of a sphere and cylinder.
