Ben Porat Yosef first through eighth grade students participated in this week’s Hour of Code, a grassroots campaign supported by over 400 partners and 200,000 educators worldwide. The Hour of Code takes place each year during Computer Science Education Week, or this year December 5-11. The students learned the way programmers teach computers to respond to the inputs they receive. They worked on the Hour of Code Site, and were introduced to Scratch, a project of the Lifelong Kindergarten Group at the MIT Media Lab. With Scratch, the students programmed their own interactive stories, games and animations, and share these creations with others in the online community. The program is designed to help the students learn to think creatively, reason systematically and work collaboratively, all essential skills for life in the 21st century. BPY is proud to have reached 100% participation in the Hour of Code Week, with students gaining exposure to some of the fundamental parts of how to communicate with devices. They worked on apps and games that use coding for art, and created video games and music.
