Linking Northern and Central NJ, Bronx, Manhattan, Westchester and CT

On Thursday, Bruriah commemorated Yom HaShoah with a beautiful program that extended throughout the day, offering students the opportunity to think, reflect and discuss the impact of the Shoah on the individual and the collective. Students heard from Mara Berger, Holocaust Education Chair at the Jewish Federation of Greater MetroWest, who shared the story of her beloved grandmother and Holocaust survivor Irma “Ibby” Jacobovitch when she was taken from her home in Transylvania and sent to Theresienstadt and thereafter Auschwitz. Mara spoke of her grandmother’s courage and resilience as well as the legacy of values she instilled within her descendants. Mara encouraged the students to learn about their own unique family histories and engrave their ancestors’ valuable lessons on their hearts.

With Mara’s words in mind, Freshman Reena Greenberg, Freshman Michali Rhein, Junior Shoshana Pinsker and Junior Esther Weinstein, shared the stories of their own great-grandparents, who each had their own unique histories of survival. All of the students and faculty left the program with a deeper understanding of the tremendous responsibility that we all have as Jews, to remember those that perished and those that survived, and to carry their legacies with us.

As Bruriah’s dynamic 10th Grade Holocaust Museum is now on display, students were able to walk the halls on Yom HaShoah, view the powerful exhibits, and allow these messages to resonate further with them.
