Bruriah’s tenth grade embarked on their Mitzvah Trip on Thursday, as they set out to learn about the mitzvos of bris milah, hafrashas challah, safrus and shatnez from experts in each of these fields. First, they met with Rabbi Eliezer Krohn, renowned Rav and Mohel, who discussed the primacy of bris milah. Then, they headed to Monsey where they started off at the home of Channalee Fischer, aka “The Challah Fairy,” who explored the mitzvah of hafrashas challah and its significance to Jewish women. There, students enjoyed baking their own delicious challahs with her as they benefited from her expert-level challah baking tips. After a stop for lunch, they visited with Sofer Melech Michaels, who gave them a hands-on workshop in safrus, using quills and a klaf to try and write their own letters. Students were in awe of the level of concentration and craftsmanship that a sofer must possess. Their final stop was with shatnez expert Rabbi Uri Cohen, who explained the various complexities of hilchos shatnez and showed the students various samples of wool and linen fabrics.
The annual mitzvah trip, organized by tenth grade advisors Mrs. Kayla Broth and Mrs. Baila Farkash, is designed to enhance the appreciation for mitzvos that we participate in. Mrs. Farkash explained, “Knowledge is power in mitzvos. At Bruriah, we empower our students to understand the mitzvos that are so central to our lives.”
