Chai Lifeline’s ‘Wish at the Wall’ Highlights Resilience Of Teens Living With Illness and Disabilities

(Courtesy of Chai Lifeline) For 15 teens and their parents, the journey to Israel was filled with emotion and gratitude. Participating in the annual “Wish at the Wall” trip, these teens who live with chronic illness and physical disabilities embarked on a special trip, bonding with others who face similar challenges.

Natalie Steifel of Florida accompanied her daughter Chana on the trip and shared how rewarding of an experience this has been for her and the other parents. “Everyone has their own challenges, but also has their own strengths,” she said. “It’s incredible to be in an environment where you can be comfortable being you and your child being her, comfortable with their abilities or lack of abilities, and having a whole family here to support you. To literally pick you up and put you in the water, or to push your wheelchair, or just to play music and give you the opportunity to shine and be happy while experiencing Israel with such amazing people. We are so grateful to be here.”

Organized by Chai Lifeline, the international support network providing social, emotional and practical assistance to children, families and communities impacted by medical crises, the Hartman Family Foundation “Wish at the Wall” trip instills a sense of confidence, joy and hope in the participating teens and their parents. The group made their way not only to Israel’s holiest sites in Jerusalem, Tzfat and more, but also to historic and recreational stops around the country, making memories that will last a lifetime.

Undaunted by their challenges, the teens made their way up Masada, rode camels in the Jerusalem hills, ATV’ed in the beautiful north, and floated in the Dead Sea, showcasing their bravery, resilience and sense of adventure.

“It’s beautiful to see how this trip brings together a diverse group of individuals from across the world and from various backgrounds for an unforgettable experience, where they connect with one another and with Eretz Yisrael in a deep and meaningful way,” said Rabbi Shlomo Crandall, director of Chai Lifeline Midwest and the trip organizer. “At the end of the day, we are all family, and that is the message which underlies all of our work and Chai Lifeline’s mission. We are a family, dedicated and loyal, supporting and encouraging each other through the most difficult of times.”

“Our mission to provide for social, emotional and practical needs of children and families doesn’t end when treatment does,” said Rabbi Simcha Scholar, CEO of Chai Lifeline. “‘Wish at the Wall’ is a wonderful example of Chai Lifeline’s continued commitment to our families who become family. This trip to Israel is a celebration of resilience and strength and a reminder of community and support during challenging times.”
