Mother of Fallen IDF Soldier Cheryl Mandel to Speak at Community Yom Hazikaron Commemoration

On Tuesday, May 10, at 8 p.m., a community-wide Yom Hazikaron Commemoration Ceremony will be held to honor and show support for those who defend and protect Israel, and those whose lives have been affected by random acts of terror. The event is being sponsored by four organizations: One Family Fund, Yashar LaChayal, Jewish Federation of Northern New Jersey and Ben Porat Yosef, and will take place at Ben Porat Yosef (E. 243 Frisch Court, Paramus).

The featured speaker for the evening program is Cheryl Mandel, mother of Lt. Daniel Mandel, z”l, who was killed in battle at age 24, while leading his unit into Shechem to capture wanted terrorists. Mrs. Mandel has transformed her ordeal into a journey of courage and conviction, and her powerful story has both inspired and had a strong impact on all who have been privileged to hear her speak. The program will include tefillot and yizkor and will be conducted in both Hebrew and English.

Each of the four non-profit organizations that have chosen to sponsor the commemoration has strong ties to Israel. One Family Fund is a premier national organization that works to rehabilitate, reintegrate and rebuild the lives of Israeli victims of terror attacks. Yashar LaChayal helps Israeli soldiers who serve on the front lines by providing for their basic needs, such as toiletries, sunscreen, towels and other necessities. The Jewish Federation of Northern New Jersey provides leadership necessary to create a strong, collaborative, caring and vibrant Jewish community in northern New Jersey, Israel and abroad. Ben Porat Yosef is an Orthodox yeshiva that educates knowledgeable, devoted Jews, enriched by our Sephardic and Ashkenazic heritage, and strengthened by our connections to the people and land of Israel.

The soldiers of Israel stand in defense of Israel every day, and it is because of their efforts and courage that Israel can continue to exist. They deserve our appreciation and acknowledgement. At the same time, those who have been touched by terror in Israel struggle with its effects, which last long after the attack. Let us come together to show our support for these—our—heroes.

This event is free and open to the public. For more information contact Ruth Roth at [email protected] or email [email protected].
