Learning for Life: Ma’ayanot Offers Diverse Adult Learning Opportunities

Now that children and grandchildren are back in school, it’s time for adults to return to their own learning as well. Leading the charge as an excellent resource in the community for high-level education, Ma’ayanot Yeshiva High School is offering a wide array of Continuing Education courses to enable men and women to experience the same stimulating instruction that Ma’ayanot students enjoy on a daily basis.

The calendar is jam-packed with diverse learning opportunities for adults, so plan ahead! An Advanced Intermediate Ulpan will be taught on Tuesdays from 7:30 to 9 p.m. by Mrs. Pnina Kaplan, a longtime teacher of Hebrew language and literature. (The class began on September 6.)

On Monday, September 19, at 8 p.m., Ma’ayanot’s English Chair, Ms. Samantha Kur, will be facilitating the first Book Club of the year. The group will review The Space Between Us by Thrity Umrigar, at the home of Chana and Larry Stiefel.

Gearing up for the Yamim Noraim, Ma’ayanot continues its Thursday shiur series with Ma’ayanot’s Principal, Mrs. Rivka Kahan, who will be teaching a two-part class on “Two Models of Teshuva in Sefer Yona.” The classes will be held on September 22 and 29, 10–11 a.m.

Ma’ayanot’s Annual Community Yom Iyun will take place on Sunday, September 25, 9:30 a.m.–12:30 p.m. Dr. Shoshana Poupko, the new Dean of Students at Ma’ayanot, will deliver the keynote address on the topic, “Revisiting the Days of Awe as the Daze of Ah.” The keynote will be followed by two breakout sessions, with opportunities to choose from several shiurim taught by Ma’ayanot’s distinguished faculty, including:

Mrs. Rivka Kahan—Could Shaul Have Succeeded? Predestination and Human Potential in Shaul’s Life

Mrs. Gabrielle Berger—The Strength of Impermanence: The Chanukah-Sukkot Connection

Rabbi Donny Besser—Why Is Rosh Hashana a Yom Teshuva?

Ms. Sarah Gordon—When Good Kings Go Bad: The Cautionary Tale of Shlomo HaMelekh

Mrs. Leah Herzog—What Does It Mean to Love God? A Deeper Look at Shema

Rabbi Zev Prince—For the Sin of a Confounded Heart: Al Chet She’Chatanu Lifanecha B’timhon Leivav

Following the Holidays, Ma’ayanot’s Thursday shiur series will continue throughout the school year. For a full schedule with dates and times, please visit: http://www.maayanot.org/ShiurSchedule2016-17.php

All classes are open to the community. Men and women are welcome. Other than the Book Club, classes will take place at Ma’ayanot, 1650 Palisade Avenue, Teaneck, NJ 07666. For more information or to sponsor a class, please contact Pam Ennis, [email protected].
