Holocaust & Human Rights Education Center to Host Speaker Michelle Gewanter

Please join the Holocaust & Human Rights Education Center on April 29 at 7 p.m. from the safety and comfort of your own home to hear Memory Keepers GenerationsForward speaker Michelle Gewanter.

Michelle tells the story of her grandparents to honor and preserve their memories. She is committed to transmitting the stories and lessons of the Holocaust to audiences of all ages. Her grandmother, Hindzia, lived in Poland. She hid from the Nazis, and was the only one to survive in her immediate family, with an exception of a brother, who fled to Russia in the early part of the war.

After the war, Hindzia met her husband, Karl, who had survived hiding in a bunker he built with his brothers in a Polish forest. Hindzia and Karl lived in a displaced persons camp in Austria, where Michelle’s father was born. The family immigrated to the United States in 1950.

After Michelle graduated from New York University Law School, her commitment to helping Holocaust survivors led her to a position as assistant settlement counsel on the Holocaust Victim Assets Litigation (also known as the Holocaust-Swiss Bank cases). In addition, she worked for the American Jewish Committee and the NYU Law School Masters of Law Program.
