(Courtesy of Vorhand Shul) The Jewish Center of the Upper West Side was filled to capacity as guests braved a snowstorm to celebrate the 75th anniversary of Congregation and Yeshiva Heichal Moshe, popularly known as the Vorhand Shul. The evening paid tribute to the extraordinary legacy of its founder, Rabbi Zev Zvi Vorhand, zt”l, former Chief Rabbi of Prague.

Rabbi Vorhand was not only a distinguished Torah scholar but also a heroic leader who saved thousands of refugees during World War II. Even after the war, he continued his life-saving efforts in Prague and played a crucial role in supplying arms to Israel during its War of Independence.

The event drew a prestigious lineup of dignitaries, including New York City Mayor Eric Adams, Manhattan Borough President Mark Levine and criminal defense and civil rights attorney David Schoen, who were introduced by renowned broadcasting executive and popular radio talk show host Zev Brenner.

Introducing Adams, Brenner noted his long commitment to the Jewish community going back decades. The mayor spoke passionately about the importance of upholding the highest standards of Jewish education, and fighting antisemitism, and the historic role Heichal Moshe plays in the Jewish community.

Levine also recognized Heichal Moshe’s profound impact on the community in its decades of service to the Jewish people.

Schoen, renowned for representing high-profile cases before the United States Supreme Court, was among the evening’s featured speakers. The keynote address was delivered by Rabbi Benzion Klatzko, a celebrated orator and the driving force behind legendary shabbaton gatherings that have inspired countless individuals.

Rabbi Vorhand, The Prager Rav, rabbi of Heichal Moshe and son of the congregation’s founder, emphasized the responsibility of every individual to get involved and help others. His wife, Rebbitzen Sara Vorhand Esq., has been instrumental in organizing community initiatives, particularly focusing on supporting singles in finding their match.

Despite the inclement weather, the event was a resounding success, a testament to the enduring spirit of Heichal Moshe and the powerful impact it continues to have on Jewish life in New York and beyond. As the community came together to honor its past, it also reaffirmed its commitment to a future built on Torah, chesed and unwavering dedication to one another.
