Students of genocide, students of war, understand the importance of words. Without them, it would be impossible to construct “the other,” “the enemy.” Lies and gross generalizations lead to fear, anger, hatred and violence. And for the last five months in Jerusalem, words have done more than their fair share of killing. The two murdering terrorists who attacked people davening in shul were enraged by the words they heard from the PA and Hamas, who insisted the Jews were reclaiming the Temple Mount. Hamas has the most to gain from such lies—it incites an intifada—while distracting the world from its continuing crimes in Gaza. These words cost American Jews three illustrious members of our community. We therefore insist that President Obama put more vigorous efforts into silencing the rhetoric of war and insist on the use of words to create a path to peace.
