A dramatic Tuesday in Israel didn’t come to an end until the stressful election night transitioned into early Wednesday morning. Then Israeli media, both Internet and TV, were covering Benjamin Netanyahu, saying, “Against all odds, we obtained a great victory for Likud.”
By the time coalitions are formed with other parties such as the Jewish Home, Yisrael Beytenu, Shas, United Torah Judaism and Kulanu, the PM will have just enough votes needed for a majority.
Bibi pulled out all the stops, visiting Congress at the invitation of the Republicans to talk about the unthinkable possibility of a nuclear Iran. The speech further strained his relationship with President Barack Obama. Back in Israel and late in the election game, Bibi announced opposition to a Palestinian State and approval of further East Jerusalem building for Jews. He was campaigning hard to bring people to the voting booths in favor of Likud.
At press time, it looks like he succeeded with Zionist Union challenger Isaac Herzog’s hopes of a coalition seriously in doubt.
We congratulate the Prime Minister. We know that he will continue to be an outspoken opponent of a nuclear Iran and a proponent of a safe, secure Israel. It is our hope that these next years bring reconciliation with the White House either during or after the Obama Administration. We also hope that Bibi listens to what his campaign opponents were talking about. The PM needs to pay more attention to Israel’s economy, housing, social services and jobs. We want him to continue as a security watchdog, but we also want him to look at the work that needs to be done for Israeli families and their futures. This shouldn’t be just a great victory for Likud, but it should be also a great victory for all of Israel.
