Having your say in The Link

Having your say with Yali Elkin Photographed by David Beyda

On parashat Tzav:

The כהן gets dressed and clears away the ashes from the previous day’s עבודה. Why does the תורה insist that he be in full uniform; at 4am?  The type of person you are is defined by what you do when you think you’re alone.

On Israel:

It’s a prism for religious fervor – however channeled or expressed.

Quotes:

“Habit is the daily battleground of character.”

On hand writing:

I think that we world would be a much better place if more people took the time to write down their thoughts with a Pelikan fountain pen on Clairefontaine or Fabbriano paper; with Noodler’s ink.

On Bitachon:

I believe our lives are organized but not foreordained. We have free will, but each choice we make opens some doors while it closes others.

Pet peeve:

Sloppy grammar usually betrays sloppy thinking.

Philsophers:

Eric Hoffer had a great insight on Israel in 1968: “Everyone expects the Jews to be the only real Christians in this world.”

On sushi:

Fascinatingly, sushi was invented around the same time as the sandwich.

On freedom and liberty:

“Freedom is two wolves and a lamb voting on what to have for dinner. Liberty is a well-armed lamb contesting the outcome.”

Yali Elkin is the CFO of a small private equity fund. He lives in Teaneck with his wife Avigayil, a pediatrician, his 5 children, and Chase Danger Elkin, the laziest dog in Teaneck. With a BA from University of Pennsylvania and an MBA from NYU, Yali can recite disturbingly large swaths of dialog from classic 80s films like Big Trouble In Little China. He was the Gabbai Rishon at CBY for 4 years and bears no psychic scarring from that whatsoever so why would you even ask?
