The Chicks Have Hatched! If you’ve been following along, you know that the Gan Aliya Primary students have been eagerly caring for their chick eggs over the past few weeks—candling them, observing them closely and waiting with great anticipation. B”H, the chicks have finally hatched!
The children were overjoyed to meet their new feathered friends and took turns gently holding and petting them, practicing grace and courtesy every step of the way. During a lively group discussion, they chose names together and joyfully welcomed Coffee, Lemon Drop, Honeydew, Oreo and Lyla into the classroom!
The students learned that newly hatched chicks are called hatchlings, and were fascinated to watch a video of one chick hatching—amazed by how it used its egg tooth to make a “zipper” and break free from the shell.
To celebrate, the kinderlach created their own adorable chick crafts using paper plates, feathers, googly eyes, beaks and legs. The third-year students took it a step further by reading books to the chicks and journaling about them—adding reflection, connection and literacy to this hands-on experience.
The toddler kinderlach were also thrilled to get in on the excitement! Morah Shira brought the chicks into the toddler classroom, where the children joyfully sang “Happy Birthday” to them—in English, Hebrew and even in chirps! On Thursday, the chicks visited again, and the toddlers had the chance to gently pet their soft feathers. They couldn’t stop talking about how adorable the chicks were. The class also read books about chicks and learned how they hatch from eggs and grow into hens and roosters.
The excitement spread beyond the classrooms as well—parents and siblings were just as delighted and came into school to meet the chicks. It was a joy to watch families sharing in the wonder of this special experience together.
Everyone is excited to continue learning from our fluffy visitors until the farmers pick them up in a few days!
