The kinderlach were so excited to welcome caterpillars into the classroom! This gave the students the opportunity to practice one-to-one correspondence by carefully counting each caterpillar. They also made observations as they watched the caterpillars move and grow.
The children learned all about the life cycle of a butterfly—starting from the egg, to the larva, then the pupa and finally the adult butterfly. They discussed how caterpillars go through a process called metamorphosis, a major transformation that turns them into butterflies.
The kinderlach also discovered the difference between butterflies and moths. Butterflies form chrysalises in the shape of a “J” during metamorphosis, while moths wrap themselves in cocoons made of silk.
As a fun and creative activity, the kinderlach made caterpillar crafts. They used their Practical Life and writing skills to trace circles, carefully cut them out and glue them together. They added googly eyes for a fun finishing touch!
