This past week, sophomores at Heichal HaTorah enjoyed a meaningful grade-wide trip filled with inspiration, education and some leisure time. The talmidim traveled to Philadelphia, where their day began with a visit to the esteemed Talmudical Yeshiva of Philadelphia. Rav Sholom Kamenetsky, one of the Roshei Yeshiva and son of Rosh Yeshiva Rav Shmuel Kaminetzky shlita, encouraged the students to take ownership of their Torah learning and surpass their expectations, echoing a theme central to their experience at Heichal. Each talmid had the opportunity to greet Rav Sholom and receive a bracha.
Following lunch, the boys explored American history with visits to the newly renovated National Museum of American Jewish History, a self-guided tour of the United States Mint and a stop at the iconic Liberty Bell. They then returned to the historical district for some free time and a chance to visit several historical sites, including the Museum of the American Revolution, Independence Hall, Carpenters’ Hall and other landmarks in the heart of Philadelphia. A highlight of the day was a powerful visit to Kahal Kadosh Mikveh Israel, the oldest active shul in the United States.
The final stop at the Eastern State Penitentiary was especially fascinating, as the talmidim explored one of the first penitentiaries founded with modern goals in mind for the criminal justice system. They were particularly intrigued by the prison’s shul, where prisoners once gathered to daven and connect. Following dinner, the talmidim boarded the buses back home after an enlightening and engaging experience bringing classroom learning to life.
