Many factors combine to contribute to risk factors for postpartum disorders: family medical histories, family stress (financial, relationships, etc.) eating disorders, past diagnoses of bipolar disorder or OCD. The Utah Maternal Mental Health Collaborative provides some quick tips for family members to help the new mother’s emotional wellness during pregnancy and after childbirth. Think SNOWBALL!

S: make sure the new mom is able to get sufficient sleep

N: nutrition and eating a well-balanced diet is important for the health of the new mother

O: Omega-3 dietary supplements are beneficial

W: walks and exercise help de-stress

B: give the new mom a baby break so she can care for herself. Have a trusted family member watch the baby and/or other children

A: adult time—let the new mom have time with her husband or other adults

L: liquid—make sure the new mother is properly hydrated.

L: laughter is really the best medicine.
