JEC Showcases Stories Of Righteous Gentiles

JEC’s fifth graders presented beautifully at their Righteous Gentile Presentation. In conjunction with reading Lois Lowry’s “Number the Stars,” the students began a meaningful unit on the Holocaust with a focus on Righteous Gentiles. One significant lesson that was highlighted while introducing the book and research project to the students a few months ago was that of being an upstander even in the most challenging of times. It was important that the students not only read this book but also delve deeper into the stories of some of the brave rescuers who were recognized by Yad Vashem for their courageous acts during the Holocaust.

Over the course of several months, fifth grade students dedicated significant time and effort to developing a multifaceted presentation comprising a slideshow, an artifact and a diary entry written from the perspective of their designated righteous gentile. They thoughtfully brainstormed and selected artifacts that would enhance the relatability of their narratives. In crafting their diary entries, students were encouraged to engage deeply with the historical context of their stories and to empathetically consider the emotions and experiences of the individuals they portrayed. On April 29, they had the opportunity to present their projects to family members and students in the school. JEC is so proud of their hard work and dedication. Thank you to Mrs. Shanna Taub for leading the students in this most meaningful process!
