Last week, Ms. Frey’s 11th grade English class went on a powerful and meaningful trip to the 9/11 Memorial Museum in downtown Manhattan. The visit came after an in-depth unit on The Red Bandanna, a book that tells the heroic story of Welles Crowther, who sacrificed his life to save others on that fateful day. Having spent significant time analyzing the book and discussing its themes of bravery, selflessness and resilience, the students arrived at the museum with a deep appreciation for the events of September 11 and the individuals who displayed extraordinary courage.
Throughout the tour, the boys demonstrated an impressive level of knowledge, engaging thoughtfully with the exhibits and asking insightful questions. Their understanding and strong sentiment about the tragedy were evident, and their respectful demeanor did not go unnoticed. The museum guide was particularly struck by their depth of knowledge and the meaningful connections they made between the book and the real-life artifacts and stories on display. This visit not only reinforced the lessons learned in the classroom but also provided the students with a profound and personal connection to the history they had studied.
