JFCS Promotes Healthy Relationship Dynamics

(Courtesy of JFCSNNJ) As we approach Pesach, many of us may be worrying about meeting up with family and friends we haven’t seen in a while. It is daunting to think about gathering around the Seder table where controversial or sensitive topics might come up. In fact, there are those where this fear of interaction is so pervasive that it causes anxiety, arguments or even avoidance of loved ones — all of which can cause strain in a relationship.

While every relationship is unique, all healthy relationships are defined by respect. One of the most important ways of showing respect is to ensure that each party feels heard. Yet, when there is a communication breakdown or when one party feels their contributions do not matter and are not valued, there can be upsetting consequences. No matter how or when a relationship breaks down or falters, communication (or lack thereof) is often at the core of the problem.

At JFCS, we approach this topic with a clear message to our clients: all relationships are difficult at times. Everyone in a relationship experiences disagreements and having those disagreements with loved ones is normal. However, the importance of remaining respectful when expressing one’s thoughts and not reacting negatively or judgmentally when listening to an opposing opinion is key. When an apology is warranted, communicate regret in a meaningful, sincere way and try to change behaviors that are not helpful to your relationship.

Relationships can be deep and complex and there is always more than meets the eye in any disagreement. The clinicians at JFCS empower our clients to unpack their conscious and unconscious feelings to promote better relationships with their loved ones — not just around the holidays, but every day.

Openness, understanding and mutual respect are essential to maintaining peace and happiness in any relationship. Expanding perceptions of what is “right” and what is “wrong” can be challenging, and admitting one’s own part in a conflict can be humbling, but the ultimate reward is better relationships with the people you love and care about. JFCS is ready to guide anyone who needs help getting there.
