Judge Dombeck Visits JEC Seventh Grade

On December 5, Judge Seth Dombeck came to the seventh grade class to speak about how he became a judge and what he does. He told us that he is a municipal judge in Hillside and Irvington and may become a judge in Teaneck. He told us that you have to get appointed by the mayor of the town to be a judge. In order to get appointed, you have to be a lawyer for a minimum of nine years. When he graduated from law school, Judge Dombeck never thought of being a judge. We learned that he could sign off on marriages and that he could throw people in jail for maximum of six months. He told us that he deals with drugs, traffic cases and drunk driving; he always tries to be fair. He told us that one time when he was marrying off a Hispanic couple, the uncle of the groom told him to give the couple a blessing in Hebrew. Judge Dombeck said “Sir, I am not a Rabbi, I am here as a judge.” The man replied kindly “I don’t care.”

So Judge Dombeck gave them Birkat Kohanim.

In conclusion, it was really cool to have Judge Dombeck come into class and tell us all the exciting things that he does. It’s also pretty cool being his son!
