In Generation Z’s Defense

In last week’s career section, Heidi Fuchs wrote about a modern trend called ghosting (“Casper, the Not So Friendly Ghost” June 25, 2020), which is when someone cuts off all communication with another person without a warning beforehand. The article went on to attempt to isolate the reasons for ghosting, pointed out the hypocrisy of some ghosters, and then finished on a tangent that, at least the way it appeared to me, accused every generation after Baby Boomers of being selfish and only acting for their own benefit. Before I continue, I would just like to mention that I am a member of Generation Z, and am on the younger side of the spectrum, so I may have a drastically different worldview from most of the people who read the business section.

The author wrote that “Boomers have always been committed to creating a more ethical and socially conscious society that genuinely cares about higher morals,” which is a point I don’t have any problem with, if it weren’t followed by “while Gen Xers believe they live in an individualistic society where people do best by looking out for number one.” It seemed to me that Mrs. Fuchs was stereotyping hundreds of millions, if not billions, of people, most of whom are undoubtedly good people, not selfish lackeys who only look out for themselves, as was implied.

I felt it was important to give voice to Generation Z, given that most people my age don’t read the business section, and even if they did, wouldn’t write in to explain their point of view.
