Enough Anonymous Letters!

I was upset by your publication in the February 4 issue of an anonymous letter to the editor, entitled “Thank You, President Trump.” In this paean to Trump, the author manages to throw in the 2017 riot in Charlottesville, Virginia; the Vilna Gaon; Moses Montefiore; and FDR, among others, ending with an exhortation to members of our community to hang photos of Trump on the walls of our homes—perhaps to remind us to face Mar-a-Lago when we daven(?)—and to pray for him.

Now, I will not comment on the substance of this letter—the riot in Charlottesville was almost four years ago, and the rest of this writer’s comments lie somewhere between slavish devotion and avodah zarah. Nor am I surprised that the writer requested that his/her name be withheld—if I wrote such disjointed drivel, I would want my name omitted, too.

I am appalled, however, that The Link would publish this letter anonymously. Although withholding a name under very limited circumstances, such as a letter about a personal or sensitive matter (e.g., a family problem), may be justified, there is no excuse to withhold the name of this writer. You should have either included the name of the author or not published the letter.

Snowflakes who will not own up to their own opinions should not be sheltered, and anonymous opinions are worth as much as unsigned checks.
