Movies and Chinese Restaurants on Xmas Eve

I enjoyed Nati Burnside’s humor column “Halachic Guide to Chinese Food on 12/25” (The Jewish Link, December 23, 2021.) It brought up memories of an experience I had some years ago. My wife worked in a yeshiva, so she worked on Xmas day. I was off and had nothing to do.

At that time, a friend and I both had airplanes and pilot licenses. On Xmas eve we wanted to do something different, so we flew to Boston. We arrived at about 9 p.m., and went to find something to eat and occupy our time. I can say this with absolute truth: We couldn’t find any place open—no movies, no Chinese restaurants, nothing, nada. We had to go back to the airport where there was a small snack stand, just to get a Coke.

The next morning it was raining, but we still went to Copley Square to see if there were any activities. Those of you who know Copley Square know how crowded it can get. That Xmas day in the rain, besides the two of us, there was only one other family in the entire square—a young man, his wife and one or two children. The males wore yarmulkes.

So I would like to say to Mr. Burnside that sometimes on Xmas eve one can’t even find a movie or Chinese restaurant open. And that is no joke!
