Letter From NJ Yeshivot Heads of Schools Regarding Winter Break

We write this letter to inform you about the latest plans for the yeshiva break schedule in future years.

This coming year presents an anomalous situation where most Bergen County schools and a number of central New Jersey schools will be following a new schedule that was decided upon by a wider day school community. This new schedule ensures that Martin Luther King Day falls during yeshiva break.

Schools in Long Island and Queens recently decided to revert back to the old schedule where winter break falls in the third week of January. This means that many New Jersey schools will have a different yeshiva break schedule from many of the New York schools.

This arrangement has created a situation that is untenable for a number of schools that presently draw students and staff from both of these communities. In order to address this issue, we have decided to revert back to the old schedule for the 2023-24 calendar year and hold winter break in the third week of January.

For the calendar years of 2024-25 and 2025-26, the third week of January overlaps with MLK day so that either system results in the same yeshiva break.

Following the 2024-25 yeshiva break, we will revisit this issue. Having recently experienced a yeshiva break over MLK day at that time, schools will be in a better position to get proper feedback from the parent body of their preference on how winter break should fall out. This will allow us to move forward as a larger yeshiva day school community for the ultimate benefit of most of our parents.

Based on the above, the following is the schedule for the next four yeshiva breaks:

2022-23: Thursday, January 12-Sunday, January 22

2023-24: Thursday, January 18-Sunday, January 28

2024-25: Thursday, January 16-Sunday, January 26

2025-26: Thursday, January 15-Sunday, January 25
