At Manhattan Day School, developing a growth mindset is as equally applicable to faculty as it is to students. The recent paper by beloved music teacher, Julienne Dweck, titled “Children as songwriters: The social-emotional benefits of songwriting in the elementary grades” has been published by Research Studies in Music Education, part of Sage Journals. For many years Dweck has incorporated songwriting as part of her lessons, as a tool for her students to gain agency, collaboration and means for self-expression. Dweck hopes other music educators will sing a different tune when it comes to music education, and include songwriting as an integral part of their curricula.
