This past saturday night, the Jewish Link of New Jersey team (Link) defeated Dr Popowitz’s Center for Foot and Ankle Disorders (Popowitz) 61-59 on a last second put back. The Link team, after a very early lead, had to battle back from a 16 point deficit, in the first half, to claim the victory. Both teams got scoring from more than half their team in the first half. Popowitz took a 32-16 late, in the first half, only to have Link go on a 10-4 run to end the half down 36-26. Popowitz was led in the first half by Akiva Feit’s 13 points (22 for game), Chezky Lewin’s eight (19 total), Gabi Antosofsky’s six (nine total), Harry Orlinsky’s four, Josh Orlinsky’s three and Max Blinder’s two. The Link was led in first by Ezra Baron’s seven points, six each from Charlie Bendheim and Yoni Mann, Elie Jarashow’s five and Avraham Glatter’s two (seven in total). In the second half, the Link picked up its defense and kept Popowitz from running away with game. Jarashow added 11 more in the second half, Sam Bendheim added a big 3 pointer and Yoni Mann took charge and scored 16 of his game high 22 points, pushing the ball full court with numerous drives to the basket. The Link team retook lead late in game at 57-56, only to see Popowitz take lead again. The teams fought hard to the end and it came down to the last minute. With the game tied and under a minute left, the Link team held for final shot. With 10 seconds left, coach Kinderlehrer called time out to set up the final play. Mann ran down the clock and passed to an open teammate for game winning shot, but the shot was off and landed in Avraham Glatter’s hand for a game winning putback layup just before the buzzer sounded.
