Making a Smooth Transition To Assisted Living

(Courtesy of The Jewish Home Family) One of the benefits of choosing to live in assisted living, or other congregate settings, has been the social aspect of being part of a community. COVID-19 has had a major impact on that, as it has on so many things. With elders confined to their apartments to help keep them safe, isolation has been a very real concern. The team at Jewish Home Assisted Living has worked hard to make sure that elders still felt connected and engaged through ongoing programming, virtual visits and, since June, outdoor visits with family. Social-distanced programs and some limited dining have added to rekindling the warmth of community life at Jewish Home Assisted Living.

With that desire for community in mind, the team at Jewish Home Assisted Living wanted to make life more connected for new residents. The complicated part is that any new resident is subject to a 14-day quarantine period, following a negative COVID test before they even arrive. This is a state requirement for safety and an important one but the Assisted Living staff did not want it to be a barrier for those moving in.

So they created “welcome suites.” These beautifully furnished studio apartments are located on the first floor of the building so that families can easily visit at the window. Each room is equipped with a technology package including an Echo Dot set up for not only entertainment but program and menu options. Internet, TV and phone service are also included. Room service is provided for three meals a day with a choice of either the main restaurant style menu or a daily special menu. Each meal is prepared to order and served impeccably on elegant china.

Since “community” is made up of people, the Jewish Home team also created a “welcome committee.” The welcome committee comprises caregivers, nursing staff, management and community residents who volunteer to participate in safe, physically distanced visits with new residents daily. These visits really make a difference. They help new members to acclimate to the community and encourage friendships within the first two weeks of their stay. New residents may be quarantined but they are not alone or isolated. They are welcomed warmly and they are welcomed in style.
