Moriah Math Has Many Colors

Blue! Pink! Orange! Green!

Moriah students have so many different math groups in their classes this year, they are color coded. “Math is so much fun!” “I love what we did in math today!” “Can I practice that a little more on my white board?” And best of all, “Wow, I get it now!” are all things teachers hear every day in the classroom.

So what does math look like in second grade? Small, teacher led groups meet to introduce new material at the level that is challenging, yet comfortably paced for each learner. Students then use some of their favorite strategies to practice new skills together, supporting one another’s learning while strengthening their own. Breaking apart brightly colored popsicle sticks bundled into hundreds, tens and ones lets budding mathematicians visualize concepts of place value. Drawing models on the mini white boards is great for problem solving too. In every available corner of the floor, kids are working together on a new math challenge. Thumbs up, thumbs down: Students then rate their level of understanding to determine if they are ready to try it on their own.

Pop in anytime to see second grade math in action. The energy is vibrant—with color!
