Moriah’s early childhood celebrated Rosh Chodesh Kislev. They had a discussion explaining how the Jewish months follow the phases of the moon. The children heard the terms full moon, new moon and crescent. They learned that through the course of the month, the moon grows or diminishes in size, depending on the date.
There were several stations set up with different activities to reinforce the moon concepts. Using rice cakes, raisins, chocolate chips and Cheerios, the children decorated their own “moons,” craters and all. Then, each child worked on a fun-sheet about phases of the moon. Lastly, the children made lovely Chanukah cards that they will send to their grandparents. There was a lot of enthusiasm and excitement! How special to be able to begin this new month of light and joy with meaningful fun!
