Moriah Tops Hillel in YMSSA Varsity Girls Basketball Championship

This game was anticipated since the beginning of the season and both teams were looking forward to what was going to be an epic game.  Two teams: intensely competitive, skilled and aggressive. The last shot at a championship for the Moriah eighth grade squad. Big expectations. The game did not disappoint.

With a roaring crowd cheering them on, both teams came out strong.  Moriah’s starting five was focused and driven, led by Sophia Schwalbe’s outstanding dribbling skills and superb court vision.  Mia Berger was invaluable with her lightning fast drives and clutch shooting skills.  Lula Glezerman, at center, dominated with her defensive blocks, rebounds and strong layups.  The group was rounded out with Aela Blier’s crushing defense and fast breaks, and Sofia Marcovici, coming off a recent calf injury, defended and rebounded with intensity.

Although Moriah led consistently throughout the game, Hillel’s talent could not be ignored and the Moriah girls could not let up.  Seventh grader, Lilah Brickman was brought in as a ruthless defender, and helped shut down Hillel’s best player.  The game was extremely physical, and every team member needed to bring the energy for their teammates.  With Kristin Rainbolt coaching from the side, eighth graders, Livia Siscovick, Mia Klein and Reese Schmell cheered loudly, encouraging their teammates on the floor.  Seventh graders, Emma Lieberman, Kendall Levine, Michal Gologarsky, Kayla Schwebel and Sophia Heller contributed with their positive attitudes and non-stop cheering.  The atmosphere in the gym was electric.

During the fourth quarter, the score got dangerously close when Mia Berger drained a much needed deep three.  This pivotal shot gave the team the last boost they needed to close the game out 54-45. Moriah for the championship win!
