NCSY GIVE Girls Give Back

This summer 84 high school girls on the NCSY GIVE program have had the incredible privilege of traveling around Israel and having life-changing experiences while giving back to the people of the land. What I’ve learned so far is that there is an amazing variety of opportunities we get to take part in in Israel. Every day is jam-packed with meaning; however, there were a few experiences that really stood out among all. In our first week we visited Shalva, a school and afternoon program for kids with special needs. We had a dance party with the children, and what was so amazing was the happiness that was shown through the smiles that lit up the room. A similar chessed opportunity we had was when we went to Aleh, which is for lower-functioning children. What was fascinating was how we weren’t able to dance with the kids there, but we could see the happiness that they had and it made us so ecstatic and emotional. We also had the opportunity to go to Yad Lekashish, where we spoke to the elderly immigrants creating mind-blowing crafts. Also, we had the privilege to greet a Nefesh B’Nefesh flight full of Americans just like us who had decided to dedicate their lives to living in the land of Israel. The experience was filled with ruach and upbeat music and dancing. It’s impossible to forget the Kotel, the holiest place that we went to as we ended the day. The emotions and love that each girl had for Eretz Yisrael and each other was extremely moving. Also, the Shabbatot we spent in Tzfat and Mevasseret were so spiritual. We experienced Kabbalat Shabbat in a park in Tzfat and on the roof of Mevasseret, which both looked out to gorgeous and breathtaking views. Not only do we have the experience to “GIVE,” but we have the opportunity to have chabura with our advisors learning middos and really applying it to our lives.

What I love about GIVE is the atmosphere it brings. There is always dancing, songs and jokes being created on a day-to-day basis. The friendships and connections are so special and it’s amazing to meet girls from all over the US and Canada. Also, the opportunities that they give us in order to give back to Israel have left me thankful each and every day. I’m thankful for the advisors who love us and give us the best summer ever. NCSY GIVE is a life-changing chavaya (experience) and I’m so thankful to be part of this amazing program.

Shaina Levin is a rising 11th grader from Bergenfield.
