Pelvic floor dysfunction. Three words that were not discussed years ago, but today are recognized as vitally important to women’s health. A revolutionary physical therapy office has opened in Fair Lawn that addresses this issue for women of all ages. Revitalize Physical Therapy provides specialized therapy to help women deal with and alleviate their discomfort, through therapy and exercise. The services offered at Revitalize Physical Therapy are useful to men as well who may experience incontinence, constipation and pelvic pain.
Dr. Riva Preil, author of The Inside Story: The Woman’s Guide to Lifelong Pelvic Heal, has made managing women’s pelvic pain and discomfort her life’s work.
When Dr. Preil entered the Hunter College department of physical therapy, she had not yet determined her future path. It was her exposure to people such as Dr. Marilyn Friedman and later Dr. Hollis Herman and Dr. Kathe Wallace, who founded the Pelvic Rehabilitation Institute in 2005, that helped her realize that this field was indeed her calling. She would educate and facilitate therapies for both men and women to help them overcome their difficulties in this little known and certainly rarely spoken of medical field.
Fast forward to 2025 and the world has become much more open to discussing and seeking treatment for once-taboo subjects, including pelvic discomfort. As Preil has written in the past, “Physical therapy is a legitimate and effective treatment for pelvic floor dysfunction. It is a process, not a pill.”
Homework is an important aspect of the therapy and, as is the case with most physical therapy, one must do their homework in order to achieve their desired result. Within six to eight weeks most feel a significant change in their symptoms.
Preil is extremely excited about the recent opening of her office in Fair Lawn, her fourth such endeavor. There are opening specials, which will be applied to any new appointment for women during the month of May at the Fair Lawn office. (see ad on page 159)
For those interested in hearing more about pelvic floor therapy, there is a program planned at Congregation Darchei Noam of Fair Lawn on Sunday, May 18 at 8:15 p.m. which will explain just how helpful and necessary treatment for these issues can be. Details to follow soon.
