RKYHS Basketball Team Adopts a New Teammate

The Rae Kushner Yeshiva High School Boys’ Varsity Basketball team has already begun their season on a winning note. On Thursday, September 24 the team held an “adoption” ceremony as they drafted their newest team member – Lucas Reiling. Lucas, who is nine years old, was diagnosed with brain cancer at just 23 months of age and has since undergone many rounds of chemotherapy and radiation, as well as multiple surgeries. Despite his challenges, the honorary Cobra donned his own personalized jersey with pride. He looks forward to joining the Cobras for their games and cheering them on throughout the season.

The ceremony was the culmination of months of planning by The Friends of Jaclyn Foundation, RKYHS Athletic Director Rabbi Richard Kirsch and Kushner Varsity Basketball Coach Jan Sandusky. The Friends of Jaclyn Foundation aims at improving the quality of life for children battling pediatric cancer by pairing them with local high school and collegiate sports teams.

The Boys’ team really enjoyed and benefited from their experience with Lucas. “It was a great idea to adopt Lucas into our Kushner family. It gives the team a sense of purpose and shows how basketball is way more than just a game,” said team member Sam Raab.

“I thought it was a really amazing experience and I’m excited for Lucas to be a part of the team this year,” added Avery Bell, another member of the team.

“Lucas is such a brave kid. He’s been through so much at such a young age. The way he handles life’s challenges is inspiring to all of us. We hope that by becoming part of the Kushner family, his life will be enriched in some way. We know that our boys are looking forward to sharing this season –and a friendship – with him. ‘adopting’ Lucas gives our team a purpose beyond just trying to win games,” commented Kirsch.

“Let’s go, Cobras!” is the usual chant at all Kushner games. It will now be enhanced by thoughts of winning for Lucas.
