The freshman class at RKYS began taking introduction to art this January, right after the yeshiva break. They began the course learning how art is a tool used to communicate non-verbally. They explored art through the ages beginning with cave paintings and hieroglyphics, traveling in time to Greek and Roman art, then Native American art used on teepees and clothing, and moving ahead to logos, street signs and the modern emoji.
After realizing the importance of symbolism, each student created a “mock cave painting” of a statement they created. The words were on the back of each piece and classmates had to figure out the messages. Each student has their own online portfolio on the Artsonia website. Students were tasked to draw their own shoe by using contour drawing and are currently finishing renderings in drawing pencil of their own eyes using a mirror to see themselves.
