RKYHS Marks Yom HaShoah

At RKYHS, the students participated in programming remembering those who were murdered and honoring those who survived the Holocaust. Twin brothers, and JKHA/RKYHS grandfathers Bernard Schanzer and Henry Schanzer spoke to the RKYHS students, recounting their story of survival as young children in hiding during the Holocaust. The students later learned about Janusz Korczak, who worked as director of an orphanage in Warsaw, who ultimately refused freedom and stayed with his orphans when the children and himself were sent to the Treblinka extermination camp. They learned more about his life by viewing the film “Korczak,” directed by the “Polish Spielberg,” Andrzej Wajda.

After also watching the performance of the play “Ghetto,” the high school participated in a commemoration ceremony with candle lighting in the Holocaust garden.
