RYNJ elementary school students walked to the park for an out of classroom STEAM experience. The RYNJ students focused on engineering something to help a creature in nature. Grades one and two began their activity identifying leaves and trees and searching for living things. The students then built a shelter for a bird using recyclable materials. Grades three through five began by searching the park for how living things in the park get their needs met. They searched for animal shelters as well as their food and water sources. Once the students completed their data retrieval, they used the engineering design process to build a bird feeder out of recyclable materials. They needed to focus on how to make their creation comfortable and safe for the birds.
