On Yom HaShoah, Ms. Sonia Kam shared her extraordinary story of survival with SAR High School’s students, leaving a deep and lasting impression. At 94 years old, Sonia’s spirit radiates strength, joy and an unshakable commitment to remembering the past and fighting for the Jewish future. Her testimony—rooted in unimaginable choices, moments of peril and fleeting chances of survival—offered students not just a lesson in history, but in resilience. Ms. Kam told the students that survival often came down to luck and the bravery of a few righteous individuals. She spoke of the betrayal that led to her father’s being shot and sent to Auschwitz to the courage of strangers who hid Sonia and her sister, Hanny. Students were moved not only by Sonia’s story, but by her light and her will to live with purpose, inspiring generations to remember, resist hate and carry her story forward.
Following her testimony, students and faculty were touched by a moving performance from Kol Kaveret, the SAR High School Choir and a memorial candle lighting ceremony by faculty and students who shared the stories of survivors from their families.
