SAR High School united as a community to solemnly commemorate Yom HaZikaron, Israel’s Memorial Day, followed by a vibrant celebration of Yom Ha’Atzmaut, the 77th anniversary of the State of Israel’s independence. The two days, distinct in their purpose, wove together a powerful tapestry of remembrance and hope.
Yom HaZikaron began with a profound video presentation, casting a poignant light on the precious lives lost this past year. The sheer weight of the 30,649 soldiers and victims of terror we remember resonated deeply, acknowledging not just national suffering but the individual worlds—families, loves and dreams—extinguished too soon. Students then delivered deeply moving and inspiring tributes to six individuals who fell since 1947. Through their stories, poetry, music and cherished slogans, the presenters illuminated the enduring impact of these courageous souls, leaving a palpable sense of connection and loss within the auditorium.
Later that day, students engaged in a powerful act of personal remembrance. Each researched a recently fallen soldier, writing their name on a label worn close to their hearts, symbolically carrying that individual with them through the afternoon. Classrooms transformed into a “memorial museum,” displaying thought-provoking political cartoons and deeply personal reflections from Israelis. This immersive experience encouraged students to grapple with the profound meaning of Yom HaZikaron for the people of Israel, contemplating powerful phrases that capture the nation’s spirit and sacrifice. The day concluded with a soulful kumzits led by Rabbi Daniel Gottesman, a beloved Gemara teacher and former IDF soldier, fostering a sense of unity and shared remembrance through song.
The following morning ushered in a spirit of joyous celebration as students entered a festively decorated auditorium for Yom Ha’Atzmaut. A moving school-wide tefilla was followed by an uplifting and high-energy Hallel, led by SAR alumnus and talented singer Yoni Gelfand, immediately lifting spirits. A lively chagigah ensued, followed by an insightful and emotional exploration of Ishay Ribo’s evocative anthem, “Eretz Yisrael,” setting the stage for the highly anticipated Kochav Nolad (Israeli “American Idol”). This year’s competition paid tribute to the iconic Naomi Shemer, whose timeless and powerful songs filled the auditorium with both the vibrant energy of a concert and the heartfelt reverence of prayer. Adding to the school’s pride, the community also celebrated SAR student Eytan Rosenstock (‘25)’s remarkable achievement in the international Chidon HaTanach competition.
The day culminated in a joyous outing to Pelham Bay Park, where students enjoyed a delicious Israeli lunch and an afternoon filled with sports, chesed (acts of kindness), creative art projects and reflective nature walks. This time together provided a meaningful opportunity to appreciate the profound gift of the State of Israel and the enduring strength and unity of Am Yisrael. Through both solemn remembrance and exuberant celebration, SAR High School fostered a deep and meaningful connection to these pivotal days in the Jewish calendar, leaving a lasting impact on its students.
