On Tuesday morning, Rosh Chodesh Sivan, SAR had its final Tikkun HaMidot program. Because Rosh Chodesh is considered by some to be a mini day of atonement, a Yom Kippur Kattan, students felt it was a particularly appropriate day to reflect on the yearlong theme of Tikkun HaMidot. As students munched on delicious Dunkin Donuts, they were shown clips from movies and shows and asked to identify which midah was featured in the clip. Then, students read excerpts from a New York Times opinion piece written by David Brooks entitled “The Moral Bucket List.” In his article, Brooks contrasts “resume virtues,” the skills we work on to advance our careers with “eulogy virtues,” the quality traits by which we want to be remembered. Brooks argues that while eulogy virtues are ultimately more important, resume virtues are often more focused upon. The article sparked lively and heated conversation about priorities and the obstacles towards character improvement. At the end of the program, students were asked to set a tikkun hamidot related goal for the summer. One student wrote, “I would like to work on my anava and come back to my senior year a new me.”
