Ben Porat Yosef Students Build Bridges

On Thursday, February 25, Ben Porat Yosef students participated in a school-wide Discovery Learning Day. Students in Grades 1 through 8 received materials, completed designs and construction plans and built their initial models for various types of bridges. Four visiting engineers helped to educate students about bridge design and consulted with the students on their models. The students then tested their bridges in order to improve their designs. In the weeks leading up to the Discovery Learning Day, both the elementary and junior high school prepared by studying the engineering and physics principles behind many different types of bridges, and tested different models. Through creating their own model bridges, testing their strength and conferring with real engineers on design improvements, the students integrated their classroom learning, as well as gained an appreciation for the relevance and importance of math and science to their lives.
